Text vs Graphics

Text displays are exactly what they say ‘on the tin’. In other words, they can display letters, digits and characters. If they are text panels, the text is usually displayed in one row.  Our LED text displays are an incredibly cost-effective method of communicating with colleagues, staff and customers in all types of environment.

Graphic displays, not surprisingly can display both graphics and text.  Text can be displayed in any language and any font that is installed on your computer.

They’re just as easy to update, but can also be presented in one or several rows in any size. This makes them ideal for marketing applications and for when you want to attract as well as inform – thanks to the eye-catching nature of graphic displays.

X-Range Signs Network Terminology Guide

This brief guide is designed to explain some of the terminology used when connecting displays to a local network.

What do I get when purchasing a Spectra Display?

Spectra’s displays are supplied with a cabled network as standard. The display(s) will always be configured as below unless you specify a different requirement on placement of order.

Cabled Network

A CAT5 or CAT6 cable (supplied by others) runs directly to your display from your network.

The configuration is as follows:

  • Displays are supplied as DHCP enabled as standard (see Definitions below for further information).
  • Your IT department might specify a STATIC IP instead of DHCP (see Definitions below for further information). If so, we require the following information when you place your order:
    • IP address
    • Subnet Mask
    • Gateway

Wi-Fi Network Option

For a small additional cost a Wi-Fi access point, also known as a hotspot, can be added to your display during manufacture. Further information can be found in the Definitions.

Please note: this is a factory fitted option so cannot be retrofitted later on without the display being returned to Spectra. Retrofitting will always be more expensive than fitting during the initial manufacture.

RS485 Option

RS485 is an older communications method and is not recommended unless you have a very specific reason for using it. If you require RS485 communications this must be specified at the time of order (it doesn’t cost any more if built in). RS485 cannot be retrofitted without the display being returned to Spectra, and it must be noted that this would be a chargeable modification.

Definitions

The definitions below are simple explanations of some of the terminology used and they are designed to help you make the right choices for your application. If you want in-depth or technical definitions please look online as there are many excellent explanations available.

What is an IP address?

Imagine your device – be it a display, computer, phone, or tablet – wants to connect to the internet. Just like how your home has an address so letters and parcels can find their way to you, your device needs an address too, but in the digital world. That’s where an IP address comes in.

Think of an IP address as a sort of postcode for your device on the internet. It’s a unique set of numbers assigned to your device, allowing it to communicate with other devices and servers across the vast network of the internet. This address helps data packets know where to go and ensures that when you send a request for a web page or a message, it reaches its intended destination and gets back to you with the right information.

So, in simpler terms, an IP address is like your device’s digital home address, helping it navigate and communicate on the internet superhighway.

Every device on a network must have a unique IP address, otherwise the network doesn’t know who the information is for. Usually in a simple network, it is only the final three numbers which are different from one device to another.

A 192 . 168 . 0 . 10 This is a unique address on this network.
B 192 . 168 . 0 . 15 This is also a unique address.
C 192 . 168 . 0 . 10 Adding this device to the network clashes with the first address, so will not work properly, nor will the first device.
D 192 . 168 . 1 . 10 This device is on another network ‘SUBNET. So it does not clash with the addresses above, but the first three devices cannot see it on the network either, so cannot communicate with it without additional network hardware/software and configurations.

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is like a butler for your internet connection. Imagine you’ve invited guests over for a dinner party, but instead of having to personally assign each person a seat at the table, DHCP does it for you automatically.

In simple terms, DHCP ensures that every device joining your network, whether it’s a laptop, phone, or tablet, gets its own designated spot without you having to manually configure each one. Just like the butler who sets the table for your guests, DHCP assigns unique “addresses” to each device, so they can communicate with the internet and with each other seamlessly.

So, if you’re not keen on delving into the technical nitty-gritty of assigning IP addresses manually, think of DHCP as your reliable assistant, taking care of the connections so you can focus on enjoying your internet without the hassle.

Static IP

Using a static IP address is like having a dedicated parking space reserved just for your car. Just as your car always has the same spot to park in, a static IP address ensures that your device, like a computer or a printer, always has the same unique address on the internet. Wireless Access Point

A display wireless access point is like a smart hub Wi-Fi connection. It’s a device that lets you access the display wirelessly, just like your router at home, but allows you to access your display screen. This AP (Access Point) has a name (also known as SSID) like your WiFi at home, it includes a DHCP server, so when you connect to it the AP configures your PC with the network settings it needs, so even for those who aren’t tech-savvy, you can connect and update your display without delving into complicated network settings menus. It’s a handy way for keeping your display updated with minimal effort.

Worth a thought:
A wireless access point means the display never needs to go on the corporate network thus avoiding any security concerns.

Subnet

Imagine a network as a bustling neighbourhood filled with houses (computers) and roads (data pathways). Now, think of subnets as smaller sections within this neighbourhood. Each subnet contains a cluster of houses (computers) that are close to each other, connected by roads (data pathways) that are used to communicate within that specific area.

In simpler terms, subnets help organise the network by grouping together computers that frequently interact with each other. It’s like dividing a large city into smaller districts to make it easier to manage and navigate. So, in a network, subnets essentially make it more efficient for computers to talk to each other, just like how neighbours might chat more often than those living across town.

Computers and devices on one subnet cannot see devices on another subnet without using additional hardware (called a gateway) and additional configuration. Further information can be found online.

RS485

RS485 is an older communication technology that lets different electronic devices talk to each other over long distances. RoHS, WEEE & environmental legislation

The RoHS regulations are an implementation of Directive 2002/95/EC and the WEEE regulations an implementation of Directive 2002/96/EC, Directive 2003/108/EC and Directive 2008/34/EC. Clearly these directives have wide implications for suppliers as well as customers and we have tried, in true Spectra style, to provide some readily digestible guidance.

Current topics

WEEE – In 2007 the final set of Producer obligations under the WEEE Regulations of 2006 and 2007 came into force. Producers, both B2C and B2B, should now be fully compliant with the WEEE Directives 2002/96/EC, 2003/108/EC and 2008/34/EC and their associated national regulations. Spectra has taken steps to ensure the compliance of both itself and its numerous suppliers and is registered as a producer.

Spectra’s WEEE registration number is WEE/AA0054TQ.

REACH – The latest additional SVHCs (Substances of Very High Concern) have now been added to the Candidate List produced by ECHA (European Chemicals Agency), there are now 29 substances listed which may require companies to respond with data to ECHA. See ECHA website.

CE marking – a brief guide

The subject of CE marking has been fraught with partial understanding and confusion. We felt a brief outline of what is a complicated political, legal, commercial and technical subject might help clarify matters for our customers.

Before 1985, many countries within the EEC had a wide variety of technical standards and enforcement policies affecting the products sold in those nations. This meant that products made in one country might not have been considered safe or legal to be sold in another. As part of the single European act, the member states began to adopt a range of ‘New Approach’ directives designed to remove these technical barriers to free trade and to promote a unified consumer protection and safety policy throughout the single market. These directives have gradually replaced the differing national regulations with common rules and lay down the essential requirements for protection. Most countries in the EEA/EFTA outside the EU also have similar regulations.

There are three directives of most concern to the professional audio/video industry:

  1. Low Voltage Directive. The LVD deals with the potential safety hazards of electrical equipment such as mechanical, fire, and of course, electric shock. It applies to all equipment which uses voltages of between 50-1000 VAC or 75-1500 VDC. The essential requirement of the LVD is that the equipment must be safe in normal use, ie: when properly installed and maintained and used in the application for which it was intended.
  2. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive. The essential requirements are that a product in normal use must be constructed so that it:
    • does not generate electrical or radio (electromagnetic) interference above a level which prevents other apparatus from operating as intended (emissions)
    • has an adequate level of intrinsic immunity to electromagnetic disturbance to enable it to operate as intended.

    The EMC Directive applies to almost all electrical products which are liable to cause or be affected by electromagnetic interference, with the general exceptions of:

    • components
    • electromagnetically benign apparatus
    • spare parts
    • second hand equipment
    • equipment for export and use outside the EEA
    • equipment specifically covered by other Directives
    • excluded installations
  3. The CE Marking Directive amended both of these directives. Taken together, they govern the conformity assessment procedures that the manufacturer, the authorised representative or the importer into the EU/EEA must comply with to affix the required CE mark to the equipment, the user documentation, or the packaging. This mark tells the consumer and the enforcement authorities that the required standards have been satisfied and declares in law that the product meets the essential protection requirements of all directives which apply to the product. Since implementation of the LV and EMC Directives, both have been subject to revision in 2006 and 2004 respectively as explained below.

Many products are not covered at all by any directive, and must not be CE marked. Mains powered equipment will usually need to comply with both the LVD and the EMC Directive. Some products, such as component power supplies for use within a piece of equipment, are covered by the LVD, but not by the EMC Directive. Other equipment, such as those powered by low voltage batteries or a DC adapter, come under EMC only, however the DC adaptor itself will be subject to the LV Directive when it is powered by a voltage between 50-1000 VAC or 75-1500 VDC.

From the date of introduction of a directive, all products within its scope must both meet the essential protection requirements of that directive and be CE marked to indicate compliance. Under the regulations, it is an offence to:

  • place on the market or take into service, apparatus which is within the scope of a relevant Directive and which does not have the CE mark.
  • affix the CE mark to products which do not comply with the essential requirements of all relevant Directives in force.
  • to affix the CE mark to products which do not fall within the scope of any Directive.

The product user documentation must identify the directives for which conformity is claimed and the CE mark applied. A Declaration of Conformity must be drawn up by the manufacturer, authorised representative or the importer into the EU/EEA, which states the recognised standards and tests which have been used in certifying compliance to the relevant directives. Strictly, this is a legal document available only to enforcement officials. In due course, for simplicity and with environmental friendliness in mind, Spectra intend that the DoC will be included on the website, and be accessible via the product data to which it relates. This may assist system installers and others by listing the standards which have been applied. Most A/V equipment will currently be covered by harmonised European standards BS EN 60065 (formerly BS415) or BS EN 60950 for electrical safety. For EMC, BS EN 55103.1 (emissions) and BS EN 55103.2 (immunity) are applicable to professional audio-visual equipment, whilst BS EN 55013 (emissions) and BS EN 55020 / BS EN 50082.1 (immunity) are appropriate for consumer products. Spectra intend that, wherever possible, the CE mark will be affixed to both the equipment and the user instructions or datasheet.

The EMC Directive took full effect from 1/1/96. In 2004 the original directive was repealed by directive 2004/108/EC with the following changes being implemented. Manufacturers no longer require mandatory third party involvement to assess conformity providing the requirements of the directive have been followed. More detailed information is required to be recorded in respect of product and manufacturer. Fixed installations are now included within the scope of the directive, however they have their own guidelines to conformity. It is Spectra policy that all equipment covered by the scope of a directive shall comply and a rolling review seeks to ensure that compliance is maintained to current versions of the relevant standards. Spectra also seeks to assist the work of industry bodies to ensure that we are involved in the process of agreeing any amendments to those standards.

The LVD has been reflected in the law of the UK and many other European countries for over fifteen years. Although products had to meet the protection requirements of the directive since implementation, certification and CE marking with respect to the LVD had been optional. As of 1/1/97, this became mandatory. The original directive has since been repealed by directive 2006/95/EC which effectively consolidated the original directive 73/23/EEC with the CE marking directive 93/68/EEC.

Within the professional audio/video industry, standards of electrical safety have always been high. Likewise, awareness of EMC issues has been required, often demanding practical solutions to system problems. To this extent, the LVD and EMC Directives reflect what has always been best practice within the industry. Spectra are committed to ensuring that all of our products will meet the requirements of the relevant European Directives; we will not supply equipment which is within the scope of a directive and which does not comply with its essential protection requirements. We have in place a continuous program of product review; and where appropriate, assessment, testing and certification, of both our own manufactured products and those of some of our hundreds of smaller and overseas suppliers. There many thousands of products in our catalogue in a wide range of categories; we supply passive electrical components and electronic devices as well as modules, sub-assemblies and complete pieces of equipment.

Many of our products are not within the scope of any directive, however those products which do fall under the scope of a particular directive meet the essential protection requirements and are CE marked. This includes compliance with directives not mentioned above, such as the Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment directive (RTTE). Spectra actively monitors the development of standards, and is involved with industry bodies in their work to develop and update standards as technology moves forward.

In keeping with our policy of trying to keep our customers informed about legislation and issues that may affect our industry, the EC has published four further Directives which seek to address some of the environmental issues of concern to the electronics industry, in particular by trying to encourage recycling and responsible disposal of equipment at the end of its useful life (the WEEE Directive), by restricting the use of certain chemicals in products to minimize their concentrations at disposal sites thereby avoiding, for example, pollution by leaching into surrounding areas (the RoHS Directive).

IP Protection Ratings

The protection of enclosures against ingress of particles or against ingress of water is defined in IEC529 (BVSEN60529:1991). Conversely, an enclosure which protects equipment against ingress of particles will also protect a person from potential hazards within that enclosure, and this degree of protection is also defined by the standard.

The degree of protection are most commonly expressed as IP followed by two numbers, e.g. IP65, where the numbers define the degree of protection. The first digit shows the extent to which equipment is protected against particles, or to which persons are protected from enclosed hazards. The second digit indicates the extent of protection against water. The wording in the table is not exactly as used in the standards document, but the dimensions are accurate.

The first digit in the rating is the protection against contact and foreign bodies. The second digit in the rating is the water protection factor.

Example: you would expect a coffee cup to be rated IP67. If, however, it was rated only to IP31, you would experience very moist trousers.

What is an LED?

An LED, or Light Emitting Diode, is a small light source used in many everyday devices. It works by converting electrical energy into light. Here’s a simple explanation of how it functions:

  1. Electricity Flow: When you switch on a device with an LED, electricity flows through it.
  2. Light Emission: The LED is made from materials that emit light when electricity passes through them. This is similar to how a bulb lights up, but more efficient and cooler to the touch.
  3. Colour Variety: LEDs can produce different colours depending on the materials used. This is why you see them in various hues in everything from fairy lights to TV screens.
  4. Energy Efficiency: LEDs are known for being energy-efficient. They use less power compared to traditional bulbs, which makes them better for the environment and cheaper on your electricity bill.
  5. Longevity: They last much longer than regular bulbs, meaning you don’t have to replace them as often.

In summary, an LED is a tiny light that uses electricity to produce a bright, energy-efficient, and long-lasting light source.

What is pixel pitch?

Pixel Pitch: this is the distance between the centres of two adjacent pixels (the tiny dots that make up the image) on the display.

Imagine you have a big board made up of lots of tiny light bulbs.  Each light bulb is a pixel.

Pixel Pitch is simply how far apart these light bulbs are from each other.

If the bulbs are close together (small pixel pitch), the picture will look clearer and sharper, especially when you are close to the screen.  If they are further apart (large pixel pitch), the picture might look a bit more blocky, especially up close, but it can still look good from a distance.

Why It Matters

Smaller Pixel Pitch:

  • Better for close-up viewing.
  • Smoother, more detailed images.

Larger Pixel Pitch:

  • Better for larger displays viewed from a distance.
  • Can be more cost-effective for big screens where you don’t need super fine details (you are simply too far away to see the detail – we can advise you on this).

In essence, pixel pitch helps determine how crisp and clear the image on a dvLED screen will look based on how far away you are from it.

Buyer Beware

Many dvLED suppliers will sell the smallest pitch they have in stock, this means a bigger profit for them, we will always recommend the best pitch option for what you have told us your requirements are.

How big can a dvLED video screen be?

dvLED screens, also known as Direct View LED screens, can be incredibly large. They are commonly used in settings like stadiums, concert venues, large public displays, and even in high-end home theatre’s.

Here are some key points about their size capabilities:

  1. Modular Design: dvLED screens are made up of smaller LED panels that can be seamlessly joined together. This means their size is virtually unlimited; they can be expanded to cover entire walls or facades of buildings.
  2. Large Scale Installations: In public spaces, dvLED screens can span hundreds of square meters. For instance, outdoor screens in sports arenas or for public broadcasting can be as large as needed to ensure visibility from a distance.
  3. Customisable Dimensions: Because they are built from smaller modules, these screens can be customized to fit specific spaces, whether it’s a wide panoramic display or a tall vertical installation.
  4. Indoor and Outdoor Use: dvLED technology is versatile enough for both indoor and outdoor applications. Outdoor screens are often weatherproof and designed to handle various lighting conditions.

To summarise, the size of a dvLED screen can be extremely large, with the primary limitation being the space available for installation and the budget for the project.

What is HDR?

HDR, or High Dynamic Range, improves picture quality by making the image look more realistic and vibrant.

Here’s how it does this:

  1. Brighter Highlights: HDR allows for much brighter highlights. Imagine a scene with the sun shining brightly – with HDR, the sunlight will look more dazzling and true to life without washing out the rest of the picture.
  2. Deeper Shadows: HDR can display deeper, richer shadows. This means dark areas in a scene, like a night sky or a dimly lit room, will show more detail and won’t just be a uniform black.
  3. Richer Colours: Colours appear more vivid and true to what you’d see in real life. For example, a flower garden with HDR will show a greater variety of hues and shades, making it look more lifelike and engaging.
  4. Greater Contrast: HDR enhances the contrast between the lightest and darkest parts of an image. This contrast makes everything on the screen look more dynamic and three-dimensional, rather than flat.

Overall, HDR makes the viewing experience more immersive and enjoyable by bringing out the finer details and making the image pop with colour and contrast.  Many of the Novastar controllers that Spectra use support HDR technology built in.

What is 16:9 aspect ratio?

Which do I need, OLED or dvLED?

dvLED, which stands for Direct View LED, and OLED, which stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, are two different types of display technologies used in screens like TVs and monitors. Here’s a non-technical comparison of the two:

dvLED (Direct View LED)

  • How it Works: dvLED screens are made up of many small LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) that directly produce the images you see. Each tiny LED can create its own light and colour.
  • Brightness: dvLED screens can get very bright, making them great for outdoor displays or bright indoor environments.
  • Size: These screens can be made very large, which is why they’re often used for big screens like billboards and stadium displays.
  • Durability: They are quite durable and can handle rough conditions better than some other types of screens.

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode)

  • How it Works: OLED screens use organic compounds that light up when electricity passes through them. Each pixel (tiny dot on the screen) in an OLED display is its own light source.
  • Picture Quality: OLEDs provide excellent picture quality with deep blacks and vibrant colours. Because each pixel lights up individually, black areas of the screen are truly black (since those pixels are turned off completely).
